At Painter’s Collision Centers, we value all of our customers, and that’s why we continually support anti-texting laws and discourage the use of cell phones and other personal mobile devices while driving.
Last year, a new Arizona Texting and Driving law went into full effect, banning using a cell phone while driving unless used in a hands-free fashion. Drivers in the State of Arizona can now receive tickets and fined for using handheld cellphones while driving and operating any vehicle.
The law contains a few exceptions, including using a device while the car is stopped at a red light or parked or in order to place a call to an emergency service.
This cell phone law was proposed in the Arizona Legislature following an incident where a police officer was killed right after being struck by a distracted driver who admitted to texting during the moments right before the crash took place.
Arizona texting and driving statistics have shown far too many similar accidents and fatalities, so lawmakers finally passed this law. While some other cities had similar laws in place, the new Arizona statewide law supersedes existing local or city laws.
Drivers who violate this law could be subject to fines between $75 and $150 for their first infraction and $150-$260 for each infraction thereafter.
Furthermore, any driver causing injury or death while also in violation of this law may face a Class 1 misdemeanor that carries a 6-month jail sentence, have their driver’s license suspended for up to a year, and be ordered to pay restitution of up to $100,000.
In the most simple terms possible–Stay safe and stay alive by staying off your cell phone while driving.
